At larger carat weights the metal choice matters more than usual, because there is more setting to see. White gold disappears against the stone and lets the diamond dominate. Yellow and rose gold frame it and make the ring read as jewellery rather than as a single stone. For a heavy centre stone we recommend 14K, which is harder than 18K and better at holding a large head steady over years of wear.

Is a 5 carat ring practical for daily wear?
It is heavier and sits higher than a 2 carat, so it catches on clothing more and you notice it on the hand. Plenty of people wear one every day, but if you work with your hands a lot, 2 or 3 carat is the more comfortable choice. Nothing about the construction changes between sizes.

Does a big stone need a stronger setting?
The prongs are made proportionally heavier as the carat weight goes up, and we recommend 14K over 18K at 4 and 5 carat for the extra hardness. A yearly prong check keeps a large stone secure.
