The stone sits inside the band, not on it

There is no head and no basket lifted above a shank. The band widens where the pear goes, folds around its two long sides, and carries on. That is why the ring wears so low: the diamond is set within the thickness of the metal rather than raised clear of it, which also means nothing projects to catch.

Why the pear lies sideways

Turned east west the stone follows the direction the wave is already travelling, so the curve of the band and the curve of the diamond belong to the same line. Set point up it would cut across the design. Lying flat it finishes it.

Pave on one arm only

The accents run along the arm that sweeps up toward the stone and stop at the turn. The other arm stays polished. Setting one side gives the ring a direction: the eye follows the bright arm to the diamond and then runs out along the plain one.

The point is covered

The tip of a pear is the thinnest part of the stone. Here it sits inside the fold of the bezel rather than at the end of a claw, so the metal meets anything the hand knocks before the diamond does.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow and white gold are photographed here. On a low set ring worn every day a harder alloy keeps its polish longer, so 10K or 14K is the practical choice; 18K gives the richest colour. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The pave diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

About the bow tie

Every pear can show a bow tie, a dark band across the widest part of the stone caused by the proportions of the cut rather than by colour or clarity. It shows more on an east west setting because it then lies along the finger in full view. No certificate grades it. We check every pear by eye and reject the ones that show it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The wave is formed to your finger size first, then the bezel is cut into it for your particular pear and burnished down by hand, and the pave is set last along the curve. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work along the paved arm and around the open ends of the bezel. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The pave is matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the pave? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre pear. The pave is in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? A gently curved band follows the wave closely. A straight band will sit against it on one side only.

Can it be resized? Only slightly, since the wave is shaped to a specific finger size. Please measure carefully and we will build to your size.

How high does it sit? Very low, lower than almost anything else we make. The stone sits within the band rather than above it, which is why this design suits people who catch rings on things.
