A cathedral shank is not just a shape. Those rising arms carry some of the load that would otherwise sit entirely on the claws, which matters when the centre stone is four or five carats. Band details

The shank is a plain polished band through the base that divides into two arched arms at the shoulders, sweeping up to support the head. The inside is rounded and smooth, and because the arms carry the height rather than the band itself, the ring stays comfortable to wear.

Choose from 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K and 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is shown here and it makes the arch of the cathedral read clearly against the hand, which is the point of the profile. Rose gold gives a warmer, softer version. White gold and sterling silver make the whole structure recede so only the stone and the hidden halo register.

What is a cathedral shank?
It is a band whose shoulders rise in two arches to meet the setting, rather than running flat into it. The arches support the head, lift the stone and give the ring height in profile.

Why set a cushion east to west?
Turned sideways the stone spans the width of the finger, which makes it look broader and gives the ring a modern, less conventional line. Set north to south the same stone lengthens the finger instead.

Does the cathedral setting make the ring less comfortable?
No. The band itself stays the same width and the inside is rounded. The height is carried by the arms above the finger, not by extra thickness against it.

What is a hidden halo?
A ring of small diamonds set around the basket beneath the centre stone. It cannot be seen from above, so the ring keeps a clean outline, but it adds brightness and shows as a surprise from the side.
