Cushion Cut Lab Grown Diamond Three Stone Ring with Baguette Sides in Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

Baguettes stood upright

Most side baguettes are laid lengthways along the shank, which makes the ring look longer. These are turned across it, framed in their own small bezels, so they read as two panels flanking the centre stone rather than as a continuation of the band. It is the arrangement you see on nineteen thirties rings, and it gives the ring a squared, architectural front.

The milgrain

Each baguette bezel is edged with milgrain, a line of tiny beads raised from the metal with a knurling wheel. It softens the hard edge of the bezel and catches light in a fine dotted line. Machine cast milgrain looks blurred; ours is worked after casting, which is why the beads are distinct.

Cushion in the middle, step cuts either side

A cushion cut has curved sides and large facets that throw broad flashes of fire. The baguettes beside it are step cuts, flat and glassy, with no sparkle at all. The contrast is deliberate. The still panels on the shoulders make the movement in the centre stone more obvious than it would be between two brilliants.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in white metal, which is closest to the platinum the original period pieces were made in, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both baguettes are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which matters more on a step cut than on a brilliant because there is no sparkle to disguise tint.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each baguette bezel is built around the individual stone so the metal sits tight against all four edges, and the milgrain is run afterwards with a knurling wheel by hand. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Milgrain collects grime in the gaps between the beads and goes grey if it is left, so brush along the edging rather than just across it. Take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre cushion and both baguettes are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the baguettes? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre cushion. The two baguettes are in addition and are cut in proportion to whichever centre you choose.

Is this an antique ring? No. It is a new ring made to a nineteen thirties design, with a new laboratory grown diamond and a current certificate.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, close to it. The baguette bezels sit low and level with the shank, so a straight band meets the ring cleanly.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the shank is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
