The cushion is a square with rounded corners and rounded sides, the shape that sat on almost every engagement ring made before the modern round brilliant existed, and it still carries that older character. Its facets are larger and fewer than a round's, so instead of fine glitter it produces broad soft flashes that people describe as candlelight. Nothing has been added around it. With no accent stones the metal colour is the only other decision. Yellow and rose gold lean into the antique character the cushion already has, white gold keeps it modern and makes the stone look as large as possible. For daily wear 14K is harder than 18K and keeps a plain polished band free of dents for longer.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cushion cut?
A square or slightly rectangular stone with rounded corners and gently curved sides, named for its resemblance to a pillow. It predates the modern round brilliant and was the dominant diamond shape through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Why is it described as candlelight?
Its facets are larger and fewer than a round brilliant's, so it returns light in broad soft flashes rather than fine sharp sparkle. The effect is warmer and slower moving, which is why cushions were the standard when rings were seen by candle rather than electric light.

Does a cushion look smaller than a round of the same carat?
Slightly, face up, because it carries more of its weight in depth. In exchange it costs less per carat than a round and has a distinctly softer character.

Is a plain solitaire easy to pair with a wedding band?
It is the easiest of all. There is no pave to line up and the shank is straight where a band meets it.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. Same carbon structure, hardness and brilliance as a mined diamond. Only the origin differs.

Do I get a certificate?
Yes. A free IGI certificate for the centre stone comes with every order, listing colour, clarity, cut grade and carat weight.

How long does it take to make?
