Moissanite is silicon carbide. It was first identified by the French chemist Henri Moissan in 1893 in fragments recovered from a meteor crater in Arizona. Because natural moissanite is extremely rare, the moissanite used in fine jewelry today is created in a laboratory.

Moissanite has a refractive index of approximately 2.65, higher than that of diamond, so it returns more fire, meaning more colored flashes of light. On the Mohs scale it rates 9.25, second only to diamond at 10, which is why it stands up to daily wear on a hand. Moissanite is a distinct gemstone in its own right, not a type of diamond and not an imitation stone.

The process is straightforward. Send a picture or share your idea, we lay out the design, we produce a CAD model and send images for your approval, and once the CAD is confirmed we make the piece.

Care and cleaning

• Take the ring off before cleaning with household chemicals, gardening or lifting weights.
• Clean it in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush, working carefully along the pave where residue collects. Rinse and dry with a lint free cloth.
• Remove it before swimming or using a hot tub. Chlorine attacks the alloys in gold and silver over time.
• Store it on its own in a soft pouch or a lined box.
• For sterling silver, keep it in a closed pouch when not worn and restore the finish with a silver polishing cloth.
