The Gap Between Engagement Ring and Wedding Band: Why It Happens and How to Fix It
Many people put their wedding band next to their engagement ring and find a small gap between them. It's common, it's fixable โ and sometimes it's worth keeping.

Short answer
A gap between an engagement ring and a straight wedding band usually happens because part of the engagement ring โ a low setting, halo, side stones or a wide head โ sits lower than the band's edge. Fixes include a curved or contoured band, a notched band, or a setting designed to sit higher. Some people simply keep the gap. The best time to solve it is before either ring is made.
The gap is one of the most common surprises after an engagement. It isn't a fault in either ring โ it's the result of two pieces designed separately meeting on one finger.
Causes and fixes
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Low-set centre stone | Curved or notched band |
| Halo wider than the band | Contoured band or a setting that sits higher |
| Side stones or clusters | Contoured band shaped to follow them |
| Bypass or twisted band | Matching style, or wear the band on the other hand |

The easiest gap to fix is the one that never happens. When a customer tells us they plan to wear a straight band, we can raise the setting slightly so the band slides underneath โ a small change at the design stage that's much harder later. If the ring already exists, a contoured band made to its exact profile is the neatest fix, and it helps to send us clear photos of the engagement ring from the side as well as its measurements. And if you like how your rings look with a little space between them, there's nothing wrong with keeping it.
Planning ahead
Decide on your wedding band style when you choose the engagement ring. See curved vs straight bands, bands for oval rings and matching sets vs mismatched stacks.
Checklist
- Decide on the band style when choosing the ring.
- Ask whether a straight band will sit flush.
- Consider raising the setting slightly at design stage.
- Use a contoured band for halos and side stones.
- Try a notched band for low-set centres.
- Send side photos and measurements for a custom band.
- Keep the gap if you like the look.
- Choose the same metal and karat for both rings.

Ring gap FAQs
Why is there a gap between my engagement ring and wedding band?
Usually because the engagement ring's setting, halo or side stones sit lower than the edge of a straight band.
How do I close the gap?
Use a curved, contoured or notched band, or have the setting designed to sit higher before the ring is made.
Is a gap between rings bad?
No. It's a style choice. Some people prefer the look.
Can a band be made to fit my existing ring?
Yes. A contoured band can be made to follow its profile; side photos and measurements help.
