Choker Necklaces: How to Get the Fit Right

A choker is the one necklace where an inch makes all the difference. Too tight and it's uncomfortable; too loose and it's not a choker. Here's how to size one.

Short answer

A choker sits close around the base of the neck, usually 14 to 16 inches long. To size one, measure around the base of the neck with a soft tape and add about 1 to 2 inches for comfort. Chokers suit strapless, off-shoulder and scoop necklines. For a gift, an adjustable extender or a 16-inch length is the safer choice.

Chokers — from delicate chains to tennis-style lines of stones — frame the face and collarbone like no other necklace. But because they sit against the neck, fit matters far more than with longer chains.

For a stone-set choker, the width of the stones changes the fit. A line of 4mm stones takes up more of the inside circumference than a fine chain, so a stone choker at the same length sits slightly tighter. That's why we suggest a little more allowance for tennis-style chokers than for plain chains. And a stone choker is rigid in one direction — it flexes around the neck but not across it — so if it's too tight, it presses rather than stretches. When in doubt, go longer: a choker slightly loose looks intentional, one slightly tight never does.

Which necklines suit chokers

Chokers shine with strapless, off-shoulder, scoop and boat necklines, where the neck and collarbone are open. With crew necks, a choker should sit clearly above the fabric. With turtlenecks, skip the choker. For the full matching guide, see which necklace for which neckline.
