U-Prong Settings: More Stone, Less Metal โ and What That Means
In a U-prong setting, the metal between stones is cut away in U-shapes, so you see stone from the side as well as the top. It's one of the most light-filled ways to set a row of stones.

Short answer
A U-prong setting holds a row of stones with shared prongs, while the metal beneath and between stones is cut away in U-shaped scallops. It shows more of each stone from the side, letting in more light for extra sparkle. The trade-off is less metal around each stone, so it's a little less protected than a channel or bezel setting and benefits from regular checks.
U-prong (sometimes called scalloped) settings are common on eternity bands and on pavรฉ shanks of engagement rings. Look at one from the side and you'll see a row of little arches beneath the stones โ each arch is a window for light.
U-prong compared
| Setting | Light | Protection |
|---|---|---|
| U-prong | Highest โ stone visible from the side | Moderate |
| Shared prong | High | Moderate |
| Channel | Lower | High |
| Bezel | Lower | Highest |

A U-prong setting is only as good as its cutting. The scallops have to be deep enough to show the stone but leave enough metal at each shared prong to hold two stones securely. Cut too deep and the prongs are thin; too shallow and you lose the point of the style. When you look at one, the arches should be even and the prongs between stones should look substantial, not like fine wires. It's also why U-prong bands prefer gentle wear: fine for everyday life, but worth taking off for gym work and heavy lifting.
Who suits U-prong
Anyone who wants maximum sparkle from a band or pavรฉ shank and is happy to check it now and then. If you work with your hands, a bezel or channel setting may suit better โ see bezel-set eternity bands and side stone rings explained.

U-prong FAQs
What is a U-prong setting?
A row of stones held by shared prongs, with the metal between them cut away in U-shaped arches so the stones show from the side.
Is a U-prong setting secure?
Yes when well cut, though it has less metal than channel or bezel settings, so regular checks are worthwhile.
Does U-prong sparkle more?
Usually, because more of each stone is exposed to light from the side.
U-prong or bezel for everyday wear?
U-prong for sparkle; bezel for protection. Choose by how hard you are on your hands.
