What "Handcrafted" Actually Means
Which steps are done by hand, which are not β and what varies between two pieces of the same design.
"Handcrafted" is one of the least precise words in jewelry. It gets used for pieces shaped entirely by hand from raw metal, and for pieces that came out of a mould and had one stone set manually. Both descriptions are technically defensible, which is exactly the problem.
Here is what the word actually covers in fine jewelry, and β more usefully β what it means for the specific piece that arrives at your door.

Nobody hand-carves every band from a bar of gold, and you would not want them to β the result would be less consistent, not more precious. The craft in modern fine jewelry lives in setting and finishing, which is where a good workshop separates itself from a poor one. The general process is covered in How Jewelry Is Made.
What varies between two pieces of the same design
Because the finishing steps are manual, two pieces ordered from the same listing will not be atom-for-atom identical. This is worth knowing in advance so it does not read as a fault when your piece arrives.
Milgrain and texture. The tiny beaded edge on a vintage-style band is applied by hand. The rhythm of it varies very slightly. That variation is the reason it looks handmade rather than stamped.
Prong shape. Prongs are trimmed and rounded individually. Under a loupe they will not be mirror copies of each other.
Polish depth in recesses. Tight corners under a gallery or between pavΓ© stones take a different finish from open surfaces. Every hand-finished piece shows this.
Metal tone. Gold alloys vary marginally between batches. Two 14K yellow gold pieces bought a year apart may sit a shade apart in daylight.

What does not vary
The things people actually worry about are the consistent ones. Metal purity is fixed by the alloy and stamped β see Understanding Jewelry Hallmarks & Metal Stamps. Stone dimensions are cut to specification. Ring size is cast to the number you supplied. Stone security is checked before dispatch rather than left to chance.
So the rule of thumb is: measurements and materials are consistent, surface character is not. That is the correct way round.
How to judge a workshop on this
Ask which steps are done by hand and see whether you get a specific answer or a marketing one. A workshop that says "setting and finishing are manual, casting is not" is telling you the truth. One that says "every piece is lovingly handcrafted from start to finish" is telling you nothing, and probably knows it.

No. In fine jewelry it normally means the setting and finishing are done by hand while casting is machine-assisted. Fully hand-fabricated pieces exist but are rare and priced accordingly.
