It happens every year: the ring won't pass the knuckle, the bracelet slides over the hand, the necklace sits too high. Most fit problems are fixable — a few aren't, and knowing which is which saves a lot of worry.

Short answer

Most Christmas jewelry fit problems can be fixed: plain and partly set rings can usually be resized, bracelets can have links or an extender added or removed, and necklaces can take an extender. Full eternity bands generally can't be resized. Before changing anything, re-measure at a warm time of day — winter fingers run small — and check the seller's terms, because an alteration can affect what they'll accept back.

A gift that doesn't fit isn't a failed gift — it's a gift that needs one more step. The important thing is not to rush that step in the first cold week of January, because some fixes are permanent and some fit problems are temporary.

First: is it really the wrong size?

Fingers shrink in the cold and swell in the heat, after exercise and after salty food. A ring that feels loose on a cold December morning may be exactly right in spring. Before resizing, try it at different times of day for a week, ideally including a warm afternoon. If it only slips in the cold, a sizing bead or insert may be all it needs.

The resize we most wish people had waited on is the January one. Every year pieces come back for sizing down after the holidays that would have fitted perfectly by March, because hands in a cold house are smaller than hands the rest of the year. The second most common regret is resizing a ring with stones set all the way round: once a band is fully set, there's no plain metal to cut, so any "resize" means remaking part of it. If the gift is a full eternity band and it doesn't fit, talk to the maker before anyone else touches it.

Before anyone alters it

Check the seller's terms. An alteration by another jeweller can affect a warranty or what the seller will accept back. Ask the original maker first.
