A round brilliant lab grown diamond surrounded by a halo of unusually large claw set diamonds, on a band with pave running down both shoulders. This is a cluster halo rather than a modern one, and the difference is size. A contemporary halo uses tiny bead set melee packed tightly so the effect is a bright rim of light around the centre stone. Here the surrounding stones are big enough to read individually, each held in its own claws, and because they are set in a slightly oval outline around a round centre the whole head looks like a flower or an antique cluster brooch rather than a plain ring of sparkle. It is the older way of building a halo, the one used through the Edwardian period, and it makes the head look considerably larger than the centre stone alone. Because the halo stones are individually clawed, gold shows clearly between them and becomes part of the flower pattern rather than disappearing. Yellow and rose gold lean into the antique character the design already has, white gold merges the halo with the centre stone so the head reads as one very large diamond. For daily wear 14K is harder than 18K and holds a cluster of individually set stones more securely.

What is a cluster halo?
A halo built from stones large enough to be seen individually, each in its own claws, rather than tiny melee bead set in a continuous rim. It is the older Edwardian and Victorian way of making a halo and reads as a flower or cluster rather than an outline.

Does a halo make the centre stone look bigger?
Yes, noticeably. A cluster halo of this scale can make the head look one to two carats larger than the centre stone measured on its own, which is the main practical reason people choose the style.

Why is the halo outline oval when the centre stone is round?
It is deliberate. Setting a slightly elongated halo around a round centre gives the head the softer, less mechanical outline typical of antique cluster rings, and it flatters the finger the way an oval does.

Is a halo harder to keep clean?

Will a wedding band sit flush?
Not completely, because the halo extends beyond the width of the shank. A contoured band that curves around the halo is the usual solution and we can shape one to match.
