Almost every halo ring is symmetrical, and symmetry is what makes most of them interchangeable. Setting the outer row on one side only turns the head into a shape rather than a circle, and gives the ring a direction on the finger. The marquise stones are laid with their points facing outward and stepped in length so the fan rises to a peak and falls away, which is a construction borrowed from tiara work of the early twentieth century. Because the crown sits on one flank, a wedding band can sit flush against the open side, which a full double halo makes impossible. It also means the ring photographs and reads completely differently depending on which way it is turned, and the wearer can rotate it so the fan points along the finger or across it.
