The twig band

The shank is carved and chased rather than cast smooth, so it carries small ridges, nodes and a slight taper, like a cut branch. Because no two passes of the graver are identical, the texture varies slightly from ring to ring. It is the closest thing to a signature that a handmade band can have.

Scattered, not set in a row

The accent diamonds are flush set, meaning each one is tapped down into its own drilled seat so the top of the stone sits level with the metal. They are placed at uneven intervals. A neat row would fight the organic band, whereas scattering them makes the diamonds look like they grew there.

Six claws on a round

Four claws give a cleaner outline. Six give more security and, on a round brilliant, distribute the pressure more evenly around the girdle. On a nature inspired ring the extra claws also read as tendrils reaching up from the branch.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow and rose gold read most convincingly as wood or branch, which is why they are the usual choice for this one. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The twig texture is cut by hand with a graver after the band is formed, and the flush set stones go in last. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. A textured band holds a little more in its hollows than a polished one, so brush it properly rather than just rinsing. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The scattered accents are matched to the same grade.

Will the texture wear smooth over time? Very slowly, and only on the part that faces the palm. Most people find the ring simply softens rather than losing its character.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? A plain straight band will meet the twig at its high points. A contoured or matching twig band sits much better, and is what most customers pair with it.

Can it be resized? Within a size or two. Resizing means re-cutting the texture across the join, which we do by hand.
