Brilliant in the middle, step cut at the sides

The centre round throws fine sparkle in every direction. The baguettes beside it are step cuts, flat and glassy, with almost none. Setting the two against each other is what makes this arrangement work, because the still panels on the shoulders give the eye somewhere to rest and make the movement in the centre stone more obvious.

Tapered on purpose

Each baguette is wider where it meets the round and narrower where it joins the shank. That taper does the same job as a tapered shank, drawing the line of the ring inward, but with diamond instead of metal. It is also harder to cut and to set than a plain rectangular baguette, which is why cheaper rings use straight ones.

Straight edges have to line up

A baguette set against a round is unforgiving work. The flat inner edge of the baguette has to follow the curve of the girdle exactly or a wedge of daylight opens between them. Each baguette is cut to the diameter of the particular centre stone it sits beside, which is slower than working from stock sizes and is the reason the row looks clean.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in white metal, which is closest to the platinum the original mid century settings were made in, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the cut grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both baguettes are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade. On a step cut the grade shows plainly, because there is no brilliance to hide a tint behind.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The three stones are laid out and checked for height before the head is built, so the baguettes finish level with the girdle of the round rather than sitting under it. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working into the two joins where the baguettes meet the centre. Step cuts show a soap film faster than brilliants do, so the baguettes will tell you when the ring needs cleaning. The narrow tips of the baguettes are the vulnerable parts, so take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre round and both tapered baguettes are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the baguettes? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre round brilliant. The two baguettes are in addition and are cut in proportion to the centre.

Why six claws rather than four? Six holds a round brilliant more evenly and spreads the pressure around the girdle. On a large round it also stops the stone reading as slightly square.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The baguettes sit low and level with the shank, so a straight band meets the ring cleanly. This is one of the easier designs to stack.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the shank is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
