Round in the middle, pears at the sides

A round brilliant is symmetrical in every direction, which makes it the easiest shape to look at and the hardest to make interesting. Putting pears beside it solves that. The pears give the ring a direction, running out along the finger, while the round keeps the centre calm. It is a quieter combination than three rounds and it wears wider than a solitaire of the same weight.

The claws

Six claws on the centre, evenly spaced, because six holds a round brilliant more securely than four and the extra metal barely shows on a stone this size. Each pear gets a V claw over its point and two on the rounded end. Everything is filed low, so from above you see diamond rather than metal.

Set with no daylight between

The pears touch the centre stone. Building a three stone ring with gaps is quicker and it always shows, because the eye reads the empty metal between the stones before it reads the diamonds. Each pear is chosen to suit the centre you order, so a five carat centre gets larger pears than a two carat centre and the proportions stay right.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in white metal, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both pears are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which matters here because a side stone one shade warmer than the centre is obvious when the stones touch.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The three stones are set out together and checked for height before the head is built, so the tops finish level rather than the centre standing proud. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working into the joins where the pears meet the centre, which is where dirt settles on a three stone ring. The pear points take the knocks, so take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre round and both pear side stones are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre round. The two pears are in addition and are sized in proportion to the centre.

Why six claws rather than four? A round brilliant is held more evenly by six, and because the claws sit at the girdle they spread the pressure. On a large round it also stops the stone from looking square, which four claws can do.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Nearly. The pear points sit close to the finger, so a straight band touches them. A shallow curved band clears them, and we make those to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the shank is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
