Six claws, not four

Six spreads the pressure more evenly around a round stone, holds a large diamond more securely, and lets each claw stay fine enough not to intrude on the outline. Four shows marginally more of the stone and reads slightly squarer. We make either; six is photographed here, and switching costs nothing.

Pave that stops at the back

The small stones run along the front and sides and stop before the underside of the finger. That keeps them out of the part of the ring that takes the most knocks, makes resizing straightforward, and is the reason pave shoulders outlast a full circle of small stones on a ring worn every day.

The round brilliant

Fifty seven facets, refined over a century to return as much light as possible through the top of the stone. No other cut is as bright, and none is as unforgiving of a poorly made one, which is why cut quality matters more here than carat weight.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The pave diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The head is made to the measured stone rather than bought in a nearest size, and the pave is set last so the small stones sit level along a shank that is already true. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside another ring. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing underneath the stone and along both sides of the pave. Behind a round brilliant is where hand cream collects and it is what makes a diamond look dull. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre stone and every pave diamond are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the pave? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre round brilliant. The band diamonds are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Do pave stones fall out? Rarely, when they are set properly and the band is left plain at the back. If one ever does, send the ring to us and we will replace it.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, against the plain back of the shank. A straight band sits neatly beside the pave shoulders.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
