Round Cut Lab Grown Diamond Sculptural Wave Engagement Ring with Pave in Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

A round brilliant laboratory grown diamond caught inside a ribbon of metal that rises off the band, curls over the stone and drops away again on the other side. One edge of the ribbon is polished, the other is set with pave. Worn on the hand it looks less like a ring with a stone in it than like a single piece of moving metal that happens to hold a diamond.

A ring built as one piece

Most engagement rings are a head and a shank, made separately and joined. This one is formed as a single continuous curve: the band widens at the shoulder, lifts into an S shaped wave that passes over and under the diamond, and tapers back down on the far side. There is no visible join anywhere, which is what makes the movement read as movement rather than as decoration added on.

The two edges

The wave is finished differently on each side. One edge stays bright polished metal, a clean line you can follow with your eye all the way round. The other carries a continuous line of small round diamonds. Because the ribbon twists as it travels, sometimes you see the polished edge and sometimes the diamond edge, and the ring changes appearance as your hand turns.

Why a round brilliant

A round brilliant returns more light than any other cut, with fifty seven facets arranged to send light back out through the top. On a design this busy with metal, a stone that works from every angle is the right choice, because the diamond has to hold its own against the sculpture around it rather than sit quietly in a claw.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Rose gold is photographed here, and on a design where so much of the surface is polished metal the colour of that metal is half of what you see. 10K holds a polish hardest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K gives the deepest colour. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The pave diamonds along the wave are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The wave is formed and finished before any stone goes near it, because a curve like this cannot be corrected once it is set. The pave is then run along the moving edge by hand under a microscope, each stone seated at a slightly different angle to follow the twist. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Follow the inside of the curve where it passes under the stone, which is the one place you cannot see and where everything collects. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The pave is matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the pave? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre round brilliant. The pave along the wave is in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? No. The wave crosses the band at an angle, so there is no flat side to sit against. This ring is designed to be worn on its own, and most people who own one wear their wedding band on the other hand.

Can it be resized? Only slightly, because the curve is shaped to a specific finger size and altering the shank changes where the wave sits. Please measure carefully and we will build to your size.

Does it catch on things? The outer edges are rounded and polished and the pave sits below the surface of the metal, so no. It sits higher than a plain solitaire, which is worth knowing if you wear gloves often.
