A round brilliant laboratory grown diamond with a crescent of small diamonds gathered around the lower half of it, rising up the sides and stopping short of the top. Half a halo, not a whole one

A full halo draws a hard circle around the centre stone and, from a distance, the two merge into one blurred shape. Stopping the accents part way leaves the top edge of the diamond clean against skin, so the outline of the centre stone stays readable while the lower half still catches light. It is the difference between a stone wearing a frame and a stone sitting in one.

The accents are graduated

They are largest at the bottom of the crescent and get smaller as they climb, which is what stops the curve from looking like a row of beads. Each is claw set individually rather than channelled, so light reaches them from underneath.

The round brilliant

Fifty seven facets arranged to return as much light as possible through the top of the stone. It is the most forgiving shape to set and the brightest to wear, and against a crescent of much smaller stones the difference in scale is what makes it look large.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The accent diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The crescent is laid out against the measured centre stone, because where it should stop depends on how big that stone is, and the accents are set last so they sit tight against the girdle. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

The photographs on the hand show this ring worn with a pave set band. That band is a separate piece and is not included. We make one shaped to sit against this ring, so ask us if you would like the pair.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working the brush around the crescent from underneath where the small stones meet the centre. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre stone and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the halo? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre round brilliant. The accents are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Does a partial halo make the stone look bigger? It adds width low down without blurring the top edge, so yes, but less aggressively than a full halo. If maximum apparent size is the priority, ask us for the full halo version instead.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, and closer than with a full halo, since the accents stop before the band. A slightly shaped band tucks in neatly under the crescent.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
