Five stones, graduating outward

The eye goes to the centre round, then to the pears whose points run out along the finger, then to the two small rounds that finish the line. Each step is smaller than the last, which is what makes the arrangement feel like it flows rather than like three stones with two extras added. It is a nineteenth century idea, the graduated cluster shoulder, brought back because it fills the finger without needing a large centre stone.

Why pears next to a round

Pears have direction. Their points face outward and lead the eye along the hand, while the round in the middle stays still. Two rounds beside a round would look like a line of circles; the pears turn it into a shape. The small rounds at the ends then echo the centre and close the design off.

Set with nothing between

All five stones touch. Leaving gaps between them is quicker to make and it is the first thing that gives a multi stone ring away, because daylight between stones breaks the line. Each side stone is cut to suit the centre you order, so the graduation stays correct whether you choose two carat or five.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. All four side stones are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which matters on a design like this because the stones touch and any difference in colour shows at the join.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. All five stones are laid out and checked together before any metal is cut, so the tops finish level and the two sides mirror each other exactly. A five stone ring that is a fraction out of symmetry is immediately obvious, so this one takes longer to set than a solitaire. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working into the four joins where the stones meet. The pear points are the vulnerable parts, so take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre round, both pears and both small rounds are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre round brilliant. The four side stones are in addition and are sized in proportion to the centre.

How wide does it sit? Wider than a three stone ring of the same centre weight, because the design continues out to a fifth stone on each side. On a 2 carat centre the five stones together cover most of the width of an average finger.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not quite. The side stones run down close to the finger, so a straight band meets them. A band with a shallow curve clears them, and we make those to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the shank is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
