A weave that does not stop

Most twisted shanks are a feature at the shoulders and a plain band at the back. This one crosses the whole way round, so the pattern is the same wherever you look at the finger and there is no point where the design gives out. It also means the ring has no obvious top or bottom, which is part of why an infinity weave reads as continuous rather than as a decorated solitaire.

One strand set, one left plain

Setting both strands would turn the weave into a single bright rope and the crossing would disappear. With one polished the eye follows the plain metal as it passes over and under the set one, and the braid stays readable from across a room. It also halves the number of stones sitting under the finger, which helps the ring wear.

The hidden halo

A ring of small diamonds is set into the basket below the girdle of the centre stone. From above the outline stays clean. From the side it shows as a line of light under the diamond, and the light it throws back up through the pavilion makes the centre read brighter than it would over solid metal.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This design is photographed in white metal, yellow gold and rose gold, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the cut grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every halo and band accent is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The two strands are formed and woven before anything is set, the hidden halo goes into the basket before the head meets the band, and the pave is bead set along the set strand by hand. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. The gaps where the strands cross are the hardest part of any ring to reach, so brush from both sides and from underneath, and rinse thoroughly. Take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre round, the hidden halo and every band accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the halo and band stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre round brilliant. Everything else is in addition.

Does the weave go all the way round? Yes. The criss cross continues under the finger, which is what distinguishes this from a twisted shoulder design.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? No. A woven shank does not meet a straight band anywhere. We make a matching woven band that nests into it, which is the usual answer.

Can it be resized? This is the one design in our range we ask you to order in the right size. The weave runs the full circumference, so resizing means re forming the braid rather than cutting and joining a plain back. Send us your size or ask for a sizer before you order.
