Why a bezel

A bezel is the oldest way of setting a stone and still the most secure. The rim covers the girdle all the way round, which is the edge that chips, and there are no claws to catch on clothing or bend out of shape. If you work with your hands, wear gloves often or simply do not want to think about the ring, a bezel is the setting to choose.

The leaf shoulders

Each shoulder is shaped into a small curled leaf and set with a few tiny diamonds. The scrolls soften the hard circle of the bezel, which on its own can look severe, and they give the ring a vintage feel without any of the heavy filigree that usually comes with it.

What a bezel does to the light

A bezel takes a little brightness out of a round brilliant, because the rim blocks light entering from the side. We compensate by cutting the seat deep so the pavilion is unobstructed from below and by keeping the rim itself thin, filed down after setting so it reads as a fine line of metal rather than a wall.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits the vintage shoulders, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The pave accents are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel is formed around the individual stone rather than cast to a stock size, which is the only way to get a rim that sits tight all the way round with no gap, and the leaf shoulders are carved and then bead set by hand. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing under the bezel from below where the light enters. A bezel traps less on top than a claw setting but more underneath, so clean it from the back. Take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre round and every pave accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does a bezel make the stone look smaller? Slightly, because the rim covers the girdle. It also makes the whole head read as one solid disc, which on a smaller centre can look larger overall.

Is a bezel more secure than claws? Yes. There is nothing to bend or snag and the vulnerable edge of the stone is covered all the way round. It is the setting we recommend to anyone who is hard on their hands.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Almost. The leaf shoulders curl down onto the shank, so a straight band meets them before it reaches the bezel. A shaped band clears them, and we make those to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the shank is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
