Every claw set diamond sits above a basket, and on a round the basket is a circle of metal directly below a circle of stone, so from the side you see a plain band of gold exactly where the eye expects to see the diamond continue. Band details

The shank is a plain polished band of even width, carrying no stones. It rises gently into the base of the basket and is left completely smooth, which means it resizes without limit, takes an engraving inside and pairs with any wedding band chosen later.

White gold is shown here and it merges the halo into the setting so the effect reads as depth rather than as a separate row of stones. What does a hidden halo do on a round diamond?
It replaces the band of plain metal that would otherwise show under the girdle from the side, so the stone appears to continue downward instead of stopping. It also adds brightness at the base of the setting.

Is it visible from above?
No. From directly overhead the ring reads as a plain solitaire, which is the point. The halo only appears as the hand tilts.
