The radiant cut

A radiant is a rectangle with cut corners, faceted underneath like a brilliant rather than in steps like an emerald cut. That combination is the whole point of it: the crisp outline of an emerald cut with the sparkle of a round. It was designed in 1977 specifically to give a rectangular stone the fire that step cuts do not have, and it remains the brightest of the rectangular shapes.

Why trillions at the sides

A trillion is a triangular cut with a broad flat face. Set against the long side of a radiant, its straight edge sits flush to the centre stone and its point runs out toward the shoulder, which pulls the eye outward and makes the whole head look wider than it is. Trillions are also shallow, so they add width without adding height, and the ring keeps a low profile.

The pave shoulders

Behind each trillion, small round diamonds continue down the shoulder in a shared claw setting, tapering as they go. They bridge the gap between the bold geometry at the top and the plain metal at the back of the band, so the ring does not stop abruptly.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest colour. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The trillions and the pave are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade. Trillions are shallow and show their colour readily, so matching them to the centre stone matters more than it would with a deeper cut.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The trillions are cut to the length of your particular radiant so their straight edges meet it cleanly with no gap, and their three points are each set in a claw shaped to cover the tip. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work into the two joins where the trillions meet the centre stone, which is the tightest space on the ring, then along the pave. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The trillions and the pave are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre radiant. The two trillions and the pave are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes, close enough for most people. The trillions sit low and the shank is straight, so a plain or pave band sits neatly beside it.

Can it be resized? The pave stops part way round, leaving plain metal at the back. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Are trillion points fragile? They are the thinnest part of the stone, which is why each one is set inside a claw rather than left open. Set properly, a trillion wears as well as any other accent.
