Radiant in the middle, trillions at the sides

A radiant cut is a rectangle with cropped corners and brilliant faceting inside, so it gives you the outline of an emerald cut with the fire of a round. The trillions on either side have straight edges that sit flush against the radiant, which is why the three stones look like one wide shape rather than three separate ones. Trillions are also flatter than most cuts, so they add width without adding much height.

Straight edges have to line up

Setting a trillion against a radiant is unforgiving work. Both stones have straight sides, and if the edges are not exactly parallel the gap between them widens at one end and the mistake is visible across a room. Each pair of trillions is cut to the length of the particular radiant they sit beside, which is slower than working from stock sizes and is the reason the row looks clean.

The claws

Four claws on the radiant, placed on the cropped corners where the stone is strongest, and three on each trillion, one at each point. The points of a trillion are its weak spots, so each one is covered rather than left bare. Everything is filed low so the metal does not cut into the outline from above.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in white metal, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both trillions are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade. Trillions are shallow and show colour readily, so matching them properly matters more than it does on a deeper cut.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The three stones are laid out and the gaps checked before the head is built, and the trillion seats are cut individually so each stone beds down flat. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working along the two joins where the trillions meet the radiant. The trillion points are the vulnerable parts of this ring, so take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre radiant and both trillion side stones are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre radiant. The two trillions are in addition and are cut in proportion to the centre.

How is a radiant different from an emerald cut? The outline is similar, a rectangle with cropped corners, but the faceting is completely different. An emerald cut is a step cut with long flat planes. A radiant has brilliant faceting, so it sparkles like a round while keeping a rectangular shape.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, close to it. The trillions are flat and sit low against the shank, so a straight band meets the ring cleanly.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the shank is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
