Why trapezoids and not trillions

A trillion side stone is triangular and points away from the centre, which breaks the line of the ring. A trapezoid has a long edge that sits flat against the girdle of the radiant and a shorter edge at the outside, so it fills the space beside the centre stone completely and carries the eye outward instead of stopping it. On a rectangular centre like a radiant, that flat contact edge is the whole point.

Step cut beside brilliant cut

The radiant is a hybrid, cut with brilliant style facets inside a rectangular outline, so it throws the short bright flashes of a round. The trapezoids are step cut, with long parallel facets that give broad calm planes of light. Putting the two together stops the ring from looking like three versions of the same thing, and the quieter sides make the centre stone look livelier by contrast.

How three stones wear

Three stone rings sit wider on the finger than a solitaire of the same centre weight and use more total carat, so the ring reads substantial from across a room. The trade off is height and width at the head, which is why the shank is kept plain here rather than adding pave to an already busy top.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The trapezoid sides are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which is essential on a three stone ring where the side stones are large enough to be judged alongside the centre rather than read as accents.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each pair of trapezoids is cut to the measurements of the individual centre stone so the contact edges meet the radiant with no gap, which is why this design cannot be made from stock parts. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Step cut stones show dirt more readily than brilliants because their flat facets have nowhere to hide it, so clean the trapezoids as often as the centre. Take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre radiant and both trapezoid sides are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre radiant. The trapezoids are in addition and are scaled to the centre stone.

How wide does this sit on the finger? Noticeably wider than a solitaire. A 3 carat centre with matched trapezoids covers roughly the width of the finger between the knuckles.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The trapezoids sit low against the shank, so a straight band meets it cleanly on both sides.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
