Brilliant centre, still sides

A radiant cut is a rectangle with cropped corners and brilliant faceting inside, so it sparkles like a round while keeping a hard outline. The step cut stones beside it have long flat planes and almost no fire at all. Setting the two together makes the movement in the centre stone far more obvious than it would be between two brilliants, because the sides give the eye something still to measure it against.

Two versions of the side stone

The photographs show this design with straight baguettes and with trapezoid sides, which are step cut panels with an angled outer edge. Both are made to the same head. Tell us which you prefer when you order and we will cut the sides to match; if you say nothing we set trapezoids, which fill the shoulder more completely on a larger centre.

Straight edges have to line up

A step cut set against a radiant is unforgiving work. Both stones have flat edges, and if they are not exactly parallel the gap widens visibly at one end. Each side stone is cut to the height of the particular centre it sits beside, which is slower than working from stock sizes and is the reason the row looks clean.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both side stones are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade. On a step cut the grade shows plainly, because there is no brilliance to hide a tint behind.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The three stones are laid out and checked together before the head is built, so the tops finish level and the two sides mirror each other. The shank is tapered so the metal narrows as it approaches the stones. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working into the two joins where the sides meet the centre. Step cuts show a soap film faster than brilliants do, so the side stones will tell you when the ring needs cleaning. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre radiant and both side stones are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre radiant. The two sides are in addition and are cut in proportion to the centre.

Baguette or trapezoid? Either. Both are shown in the photographs and both are made to the same head. Say which you want at checkout and we will cut the sides accordingly.

How is a radiant different from an emerald cut? Similar outline, completely different faceting. An emerald cut is a step cut and looks glassy. A radiant has brilliant faceting and sparkles like a round.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, close to it. The side stones sit low and level with the shank, so a straight band meets the ring cleanly.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the shank is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
