Each accent in the run is set at roughly four fifths the diameter of the one before it. That number matters because of how the eye reads a sequence. Reduce by very little and the stones look the same size, so the run reads as a plain row that happens to fade out at the end. Reduce by too much and each stone is visibly a step down from its neighbour, so the eye counts them individually and the shoulder looks like a staircase. Around four fifths sits in between: enough difference that the run clearly tapers, not enough for any single step to register on its own. The same proportion turns up throughout classical design for the same reason, and a jeweller setting a graduated shoulder by feel is usually approximating it without knowing the number. Working to it deliberately is what makes the taper look inevitable rather than arbitrary.
