What a radiant cut is

A rectangle with cut corners, like an emerald cut, but faceted as a brilliant rather than in steps. It was invented in 1977 specifically to give a rectangular stone the fire of a round, and it does: a radiant sparkles as hard as any brilliant while keeping the elongated outline that lengthens a finger.

Why a bezel suits it

A radiant has eight sides and eight corners, all of them straight lines. A bezel is the only setting that can trace that outline continuously; claws would sit on four of the corners and leave the rest of the geometry to be guessed at. Here the rim follows every edge, so the shape of the stone is the shape of the ring.

Cut corners are the point

Square corners chip. That is why almost every rectangular diamond cut in the last century has its corners taken off. A bezel goes further and covers them entirely, which makes this the most durable way to wear a rectangular stone.

The fine band

The shank is kept deliberately narrow so the bezel reads as the widest part of the ring and the stone looks larger for it. Because a bezel adds metal at the top, a fine shank also keeps the overall weight balanced on the finger.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here, and a warm rectangle around a colourless stone is the cleanest version of this design. In white gold the rim nearly vanishes and the stone appears to sit directly on the finger. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. A bezel for a radiant has to turn eight corners at exactly the angle of your individual stone, and any variation shows immediately against a straight edge. It is cut and chased by hand, which is why we cannot make these in advance. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. A full bezel keeps dirt out far better than claws, so this is one of the easiest settings to maintain. Wipe the outside of the rim to keep the edges sharp and bright.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

How does a radiant differ from an emerald cut? They have the same outline. An emerald cut is faceted in steps and gives broad mirror like flashes; a radiant is faceted as a brilliant and gives fast, bright sparkle. If you like the shape of an emerald cut but want more fire, this is the stone.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes, very well. The bezel sits low and the shank is straight, so a plain band meets it cleanly on both sides.

Can it be resized? Yes. The band carries no stones, so resizing does not disturb the setting.
