Three cuts in one line

The radiant in the middle has brilliant faceting inside a rectangular outline. The baguettes beside it are step cuts, flat and mirror like, with almost no sparkle. The small rounds at the ends are full brilliants again. Reading outward you get sparkle, then stillness, then sparkle, which gives the row a rhythm that five matching stones would not have.

Baguettes turned across the finger

The baguettes stand upright rather than lying along the shank. Set that way they act as two narrow panels holding the centre stone between them, which squares off the front of the ring. It is a nineteen thirties arrangement and it suits the rectangular outline of the radiant.

Straight edges have to line up

A baguette set next to a radiant is unforgiving work, because both stones have straight edges and any misalignment widens visibly at one end. Each baguette is cut to the height of the particular centre stone it sits beside, which is slower than working from stock sizes and is the reason the row looks clean.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both baguettes and both rounds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade. On the baguettes in particular the grade shows, because a step cut has no brilliance to hide a tint behind.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. All five stones are laid out and checked together before the head is built, the baguette seats are cut individually, and both sides are matched to each other before the shank is closed. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working into the four joins where the stones meet. Step cuts show a soap film faster than brilliants do, so the baguettes will tell you when the ring needs cleaning before the centre does. Take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre radiant, both baguettes and both small rounds are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre radiant. The four side stones are in addition and are cut in proportion to the centre.

How is a radiant different from an emerald cut? Similar rectangular outline, completely different faceting. An emerald cut is a step cut and looks glassy. A radiant has brilliant faceting and sparkles like a round.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, close to it. The side stones sit low and level with the shank, so a straight band meets the ring cleanly.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the shank is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
