A bezel over an eternity band

Most large stones sit in claws. A bezel wraps the whole girdle in a thin wall of metal instead, which protects the corners of the stone, keeps the profile clean and stops the ring catching on clothing. Lifting it above a fully set band gives the diamond air underneath and lets light through from both sides.

The band is set the whole way round

Small round diamonds run the full circumference, not just the front half. You see it on the hand when the ring turns: there is no plain back. It also means the ring is worth resizing carefully rather than cutting, which we do by making it to your size in the first place.

The radiant cut

A rectangle with cropped corners and brilliant style faceting inside it. It has the outline of an emerald cut and the fire of a round, which is why it photographs so well in a bezel: the straight rim frames a stone that is anything but still.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. All three golds are photographed here. Yellow gold gives the strongest contrast at the bezel rim, white gold makes the rim almost disappear into the stone. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The pave diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel is formed around the measured stone so the rim sits even on all four sides, then the band is set by hand, stone by stone, all the way round. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing under the bezel and along both sides of the band. A bezel collects less behind the stone than claws do, but it still wants cleaning. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The pave is matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the band? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre radiant cut. The pave band is in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Can a full eternity band be resized later? Only within narrow limits, because stones run the whole way round. Please order your correct size, and ask us for a free ring sizer if you are unsure.

Will a wedding band sit against it? Yes, and many people wear a plain band on the other side of the finger instead, since this ring is already fully set.

Is a bezel safer than claws? For a cornered stone worn every day, yes. There is nothing to snag and the corners are covered.
