The princess cut exists because of what a diamond crystal looks like before anyone touches it. Rough diamond most often forms as an octahedron, two square based pyramids joined at the base, and sawing that octahedron in half gives you two square blocks. A round brilliant has to be ground down from one of those blocks, which throws away a great deal of weight. A princess cut keeps the square footprint, so a much higher proportion of the original crystal survives into the finished stone. That is why a princess of a given carat weight has historically cost less than a round of the same weight and quality, and it is a piece of geometry rather than a matter of fashion.

Band details

The shank is slim and evenly rounded, pave set along its upper length. It meets the head squarely so the sides of the stone run parallel with the band, which is what keeps a square outline looking straight on the finger rather than tilted.

White gold is shown here and it suits a princess particularly well, because the corner claws are the most visible metal in the whole design and a white claw against a white stone disappears.
