Pear Cut Moissanite Twisted Vine Pave Hidden Halo Engagement Ring in Sterling Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

A pear cut moissanite over a twisted vine band, with a hidden halo of small round stones wrapping the base of the setting. Two slender strands cross around the finger, one micropave set and one left polished, and the pave carries up through the crossover into the gallery so the sparkle does not stop at the shoulders. From above it reads as a fine twisted solitaire. From the side there is considerably more going on.

What is different about this one

We list this design in two versions and it is worth being clear about which is which, because from directly above they look almost the same.

Our Petite Twisted Vine Pave ring has the identical twisted shank, one set strand and one plain, and a bare polished basket under the stone.

This ring is that design with a hidden halo added. A row of small round moissanite runs right around the base of the head, and the pave continues up the crossing arms into the gallery rather than stopping where the shank meets the setting.

Look at the two side photographs together. The difference is obvious in profile and nearly invisible from the top. This version costs more because there are more stones and more setting hours. If you almost always look at your ring from above, which most people do, the plain basket version gives you the same look for less and we would rather tell you that than let you spend the difference by accident.

The hidden halo

The halo does three things. It gives the profile a finished, decorated look instead of an empty basket. It feeds light back up into the pavilion of the pear, so the centre stone picks up a little extra life when you move your hand. And it lifts the head very slightly, which on a slim twisted band helps the centre stone read larger.

What it does not do is make the ring look bigger from above. That is what a visible halo is for. A hidden halo is a detail for the wearer and for anyone close enough to see it.

The twist

Two strands wind around each other the whole way round. Curving the pave line means the stones face slightly different directions along the band, so some part of the row is always catching light however your hand is turned. The plain strand gives the eye somewhere to rest and keeps the ring reading as fine metalwork rather than a solid block of sparkle.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger.

Every stone in the ring, the centre, the pave along the twist and the hidden halo, is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity. We match the accents to the centre before setting so nothing reads warmer or greyer than the stone above it.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond among stones you would wear daily.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. The hidden halo scales with the centre so the proportion stays right at every size.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in white gold, where the metal disappears behind the stones. Rose gold suits a twist particularly well because the two strands read as different tones as they wind past each other. Silver is the most affordable way to own the design. 10K is the hardest gold and most scratch resistant, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest in colour and softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Two places need attention: the groove where the two strands cross, and underneath the head where the hidden halo sits. Both trap soap and hand cream, and a pave ring that has not been cleaned in months reads grey rather than white. Rinse well and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will anyone see the hidden halo? You will, every time you look at your hand at an angle. People sitting next to you will. Across a table, no.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not completely. The twist gives the shank a wavy outline, so a flat band touches only at the high points. A matching twisted band or a contoured band solves it, or wear this one alone.

Can it be resized? Within about a size either way. The set strand and the shaped shank limit how far it can be stretched, so please try to order the right size and write to us if you are unsure.

Do the small stones fall out? Properly set pave does not, but it is more vulnerable to knocks than a plain band. Have the settings checked every couple of years.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw. The point is the vulnerable part of any pear shaped stone.
