Step 1
Design & Selection
We finalise your design and hand-pick the certified center stone.
Save 20%A pear cut moissanite in six claws on a band that does not run straight. The shank sweeps up on one side, passes behind the stone and comes down on the other, so the two ends bypass each other rather than meeting head on. Where the metal reaches the setting it is sculpted into a soft flowing curve rather than a squared shoulder. There are no accent stones anywhere on the ring.
We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.
A conventional solitaire is symmetrical. The band comes up equally on both sides and the stone sits in the middle. A bypass shank breaks that symmetry on purpose. The two arms of the band arrive at the stone at different heights and slide past one another, which makes the ring look as though it has been drawn in one continuous line rather than assembled from parts.
On a pear it works particularly well, because the pear is itself an asymmetric shape. The sweep of the band echoes the taper of the stone from the wide belly up to the point, so the whole ring moves in one direction on the finger.
The sculpting is the other half of it. Rather than a plain round wire, the shank is shaped so it thickens and thins along its length, widening into a soft leaf-like form where it meets the setting and narrowing away toward the back of the finger. That is what stops a plain metal ring from looking plain.
We list an East West Pear on Open Bypass Shank, where the pear lies sideways across the finger with its point facing out to one side. That is a bolder, more unusual ring and it exposes the point of the stone.
This one sets the pear the traditional way, point up the finger, and puts the drama in the band instead. It is the easier of the two to wear and the point is protected by its own claw rather than sitting exposed at the edge of the setting.
There is nothing on this ring except the metal and the centre stone. That means the quality of the shaping and the polish is doing all the work, which is why we make this design in our own workshop rather than buying in a casting. A sculpted shank that has been filed and polished properly catches light along its curves in a way a rough one does not.
It also means the ring is very easy to live with. Nothing to snag, nothing small to come loose, and it can be resized without difficulty.
The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire rather than the broad mirror flashes of a step cut. With no accents to compete with it, the size and the quality of this stone is what the ring is.
Every centre we set is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond among stones you would wear every day.
Choose from 2 carat up to 5 carat. On a plain sculpted band the larger sizes look particularly striking, because there is nothing beside the stone to reduce it.
Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, where the curves of the shank read most clearly because warm metal shows shadow better than white. Silver gives a bright finish for much less. 10K is the hardest gold and most scratch resistant, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest in colour and softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.
Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, file, sculpt and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.
The easiest ring in our collection to look after. Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft cloth or brush. There is no pave to clog and no gallery to trap dirt. Rinse and dry. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.
Will a wedding band sit flush? Not entirely. The bypass means the shank is at different heights on either side of the stone, so a straight band will meet it at an angle on one side. A curved or shaped band solves this, and many people wear this design on its own because the line of the shank is the point of it.
Can it be resized? Yes, easily. There are no stones in the shank. The sculpting is concentrated near the head, so resizing at the back does not disturb the design.
Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw. The point is the vulnerable part of any pear shaped stone.
Does it look off centre on the finger? The stone sits centred. It is the band that is asymmetric, and that reads as movement rather than as a mistake. Look at the side photographs to see how it sits.
Will the shank wear thin? The narrowest part is at the back where it does not carry the setting. It is a normal working thickness, not a knife edge, so it will wear as any plain band does over decades.
