A pear cut moissanite in six claws on a wide band set with large round accents in shared prongs, the setting running most of the way round the finger with scalloped seats between each stone so the metal dips and rises along the edge. This is the boldest set band in our pear range.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

Large stones, not micropave

The accents on this band are considerably bigger than the stones we use in pave, and that changes everything about how the ring reads.

Micropave uses very small stones packed tightly, which produces a fine even glitter. This ring uses substantial rounds, each gripped between shared prongs, so instead of glitter you get a row of individual bright stones each throwing its own flash. In photographs the difference is obvious, and in person it is more so, because a larger stone returns light from a larger surface and the flashes carry further across a room.

The scalloped edge is part of the same idea. The metal between the seats is cut away in shallow curves, so more of each stone is exposed and light reaches it from the sides as well as the top.

How far the setting runs

The accents continue well past the shoulders and round toward the bottom of the shank, so from most angles the ring reads as set all the way round rather than as a solitaire with decorated shoulders. Only a short section at the base is left plain, which is what makes the ring resizable at all.

The result is closer to an eternity band with a pear on top than to a conventional engagement ring, and that is the reason to choose it.

How this compares with our other set band pear rings

Our Shared Prong Pave ring uses the same setting method but with smaller stones covering only the shoulders, on a slimmer band.

Our Three Sided Pave ring sets the top and both side faces of the shank with fine pave, which is bright from every angle but made of many tiny stones.

Our Cluster Side Full Pave ring runs pave the full length but adds graduated cluster side stones beside the centre.

This ring is the one with the largest individual accents and the widest band. If you have looked at pave rings and found them too fine, or you want a ring that makes an obvious statement rather than a delicate one, this is the one to choose. It is also the heaviest, and it uses the most stone weight of anything in our pear range, which is why it is the most expensive band we make in this shape.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger.

The band accents are round moissanite, larger than pave and graduated slightly so they reduce toward the bottom of the shank. Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, matched before setting. Matching is critical on a ring like this, because every accent is large enough to be examined individually and one stone out of tone would be visible immediately.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. This band carries a large centre extremely well because the shank has the visual weight to balance it.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in white gold, which is the most dramatic version because the metal recedes and the band becomes an unbroken circle of light. Yellow gold shows the shared prongs and scalloped edges clearly and gives the ring more visible structure. Rose gold warms the whole thing. Silver gives the white effect affordably. On a ring holding this many substantial stones we would recommend 10K or 14K over 18K, because harder alloys hold prong settings more securely over years of wear. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, cut each seat, set every accent in shared prongs, scallop the edges, file and polish each ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations. This ring takes longer at the bench than anything else in the range.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, worked between the stones and along the scalloped edges. This design cleans more easily than micropave, because the brush reaches all round each accent, but there are more settings to reach. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not really, and this is the honest limitation. The accents run most of the way round and sit proud of the shank, so a flat band rubs against stones and prongs rather than metal. Many people wear this ring alone, which suits it. If you want to stack, a spacer band is the sensible answer.

Can it be resized? Only slightly. There is a short plain section at the base and that is all there is to work with. Please get the size right and write to us if you are unsure, we would rather help before we make it.

Is it heavy? Yes, noticeably heavier than our slim bands. Some people love the substance and some do not, so it is worth knowing before you order.

Do the stones fall out? Shared prong is a strong setting and stones of this size are held more securely than pave beads hold very small ones. Have it checked every couple of years as with any set band.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
