Pear Cut Moissanite East West Bypass Open Shank Engagement Ring

A pear cut moissanite set east west, meaning the stone lies across the finger with its point to the side rather than running up the length of the hand. It is held by four sculpted claws with pointed tips, on a bypass shank whose two ends sweep past each other instead of meeting, leaving an open gap on the upper side of the ring.

Turning a pear sideways changes it completely. Instead of lengthening the finger it sits wide across it, and because the shank never closes, the stone appears to be caught between two passing lines of metal rather than mounted on a band. There are no accent stones anywhere. This is a quiet, sculptural ring rather than a sparkling one.

An honest note about the point

Set east west, the tip of the pear projects sideways across the finger rather than toward the fingertip. In practice this means it is a little more exposed to knocks from the side than in a north south setting, and we use a claw over the point rather than a plain prong for that reason. It is a design choice worth making with your eyes open: if you want maximum protection for the point, our full bezel or wide bezel pear rings are the safer answer.

How it compares to our other pear rings

Every design is listed separately, and this is the only one in our pear range set east west. Our polished split shank solitaire has the same plain metal language but sets the stone the conventional way up on a closed band. Our wide bezel solitaire encloses the stone in a heavy cup. This one is the lightest and most unusual of the three, and the only one where the band deliberately does not close.

Metals and sizes

Choose from 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K and 18K gold in yellow, rose and white. All gold is solid, never plated and never filled. White gold is rhodium finished. With no stones on the band and no texture anywhere, metal colour is the only decision besides the stone. Centre stone sizes run from 2 carat to 5 carat, and the larger sizes look particularly striking set sideways.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India. Every ring is made by our own team after you order. A bypass shank has to be sprung correctly so the two open ends hold their position and do not gradually splay apart with wear; ours are work hardened after forming rather than simply bent to shape.

Care

Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs scale and takes daily wear well. Clean with warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid gripping the ring by its open ends when you take it off; hold the band at the back instead, which keeps the bypass in shape for decades. Have the four claws checked once a year.

Resizing

Because the shank is open, resizing is done by adjusting the length and curve of the two arms rather than by cutting and joining. We can move it comfortably by about two sizes. Tell us your size accurately and we will make it right the first time.

Questions people ask

Is the centre stone a diamond? No. It is moissanite, a gemstone in its own right, and we never describe it as a diamond.

Can I have the stone set the normal way up instead? Not on this design. The bypass shank is built around a horizontal stone. If you want a north south pear on a plain band, our polished split shank solitaire is the closest thing we make.

Will the open ends catch on clothing? The ends are rounded and polished and sit close together, so it is not a snagging design. It is smoother in wear than any claw setting we make.

Can I wear a wedding band with it? Yes, and it works better than you might expect. The stone sits low and sideways, so a plain straight band tucks against the shank without fighting the setting.

Does the price change with carat size? Yes. The 2 carat is the base price and each larger size adds a small amount. The exact price appears when you select a combination.
