A pear cut moissanite in six claws, with accent stones running down each shoulder that alternate marquise, round, marquise, round. What makes this ring unusual is that every one of those accents sits in its own complete bezel, a closed rim of metal wrapped fully around the stone, with a clear stretch of polished band between each one.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

Bezels instead of claws

Most accented rings hold their small stones with claws or beads. This one encircles each stone completely. It is slower work, because every bezel has to be made to fit its individual stone and then burnished down evenly all the way round without distorting the rim.

The result looks quite different. Each accent reads as a small framed jewel rather than as part of a continuous glittering line, and the metal rims give the band a rhythm of gold and white, gold and white, all the way along. It is a cleaner and more graphic effect than pave, and closer to antique jewellery than to modern sparkle.

There is a practical advantage too. A bezel is the most secure setting there is for a small stone, because the metal grips the entire girdle rather than four points of it, and there are no raised claws to catch on clothing. If you have ever lost a pave stone from a ring, this is the setting that solves it.

The honest trade off is brightness. Wrapping metal around a stone covers part of it, so a bezel set accent returns a little less light than the same stone held in claws. You gain security and a cleaner look, and you give up a small amount of sparkle. That is a real choice, not a marketing point.

How this compares with our other alternating accent pear ring

We list a Spaced Alternating Marquise and Round pear ring that uses the same two shapes in the same alternating order. It is genuinely a different ring and the difference is the setting.

On that one the accents are held in fine claws, sit closer together, and there is very little metal showing. It sparkles more and reads lighter.

On this one every accent is bezelled, the stones are spaced further apart with visible polished band between them, and the metal rims are part of the design. It reads more deliberate and more antique, and it is the more secure of the two.

Compare the two top photographs. Once you know to look for the metal rims the difference is immediate.

The stones

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its point elongates the finger. It is held in six claws rather than a bezel, so the centre stays as open and bright as possible.

The accents are marquise and round moissanite. Alternating the two shapes gives the band a repeating pattern, the marquise laid along the length of the band and the rounds punctuating between them.

Every stone in the ring is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, matched before setting. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why the pear fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it holds up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat, with the accents scaled to match.

The band

A slim rounded shank, polished between the bezels and plain from the last accent to the palm. The bezels sit close to the band rather than raised on it, so the whole ring stays low and snag free.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, which we think suits this design best because the warm rims frame the white stones and the alternating pattern reads clearly. In white metal the bezels blend into the stones and the effect is much subtler. Silver gives that same white effect for much less. 10K is the hardest gold, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest in colour and softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast, make each bezel, set, file and polish every ring for your chosen metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives, which is how we can offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

One of the easier accented rings to keep clean, because a bezel has no beads or claws to trap dirt underneath. Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft brush along the band. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Are bezel set stones more secure? Yes, meaningfully so. The metal holds the entire edge of the stone. This is the most robust way we set small accents.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, well. The bezels are low and the band is round, so a flat or slightly curved band sits close.

Can it be resized? Yes, within a reasonable range, because the lower part of the shank has no stones.

Do bezels look chunky? On this ring the rims are fine, only just thick enough to hold. Look at the top photograph at full size before deciding, because it is a matter of taste rather than of quality.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, it has its own claw.
