A pear cut moissanite held in a full bezel, set on a wide band that carries a channel of pave down its centre with a raised polished rail running along each edge. The rails sit slightly proud of the stones, so the sparkle is recessed between two bright lines of metal.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

Pricing note

This band is wider than our standard, around 3.5 mm rather than the 2 mm our base prices are built on. There is a width surcharge of 50 dollars in silver and 200 dollars in gold included in the prices shown, because the ring uses genuinely more metal and takes longer to work. We have rounded the surcharge down to a single millimetre step in your favour. Nothing is added at checkout, the price you see is the price.

The rail construction

Most pave bands set the stones flush with the top surface, which looks good and wears down over years as the metal beading rubs away. This band does something different. Two solid polished rails run the length of the shank and stand slightly above the row of stones, and the pave sits in the trough between them.

Practically, that means the rails take the knocks and the stones do not. It is the same reasoning behind a channel setting, applied along the whole band rather than to a short section. If you work with your hands, or you have lost stones from a pave ring before, this is the more sensible construction.

Visually it gives you a line of light with a hard bright edge on either side, rather than a soft field of sparkle. It reads as architectural rather than romantic.

The bezel

The centre pear is held in a continuous rim of metal that follows the whole outline, including round the point. Nothing catches, nothing snags on knitwear, and the girdle of the stone cannot be chipped by a knock because there is metal in the way.

The tradeoff, and we would rather say it than let you find it out, is that a bezel covers the outer edge of the stone. A bezel set pear looks slightly smaller than the same stone in claws, and slightly less light enters from the sides. What you get in return is the most secure setting there is and a very clean outline.

How this compares with our other bezel pear rings

We make three bezel set pear rings and they are genuinely different.

The Vintage Bezel has a milgrain beaded rim and a slim plain band, for an antique look.

The Low Smooth Bezel has a plain polished rim, a slim band, an open back and no accent stones anywhere. It is the lowest profile and the most minimal.

This one has the plain polished rim of the Low Smooth Bezel but pairs it with the widest and most worked band of the three. The interest is in the shank rather than around the stone. If you like a bezel but find a plain band too quiet, this is the answer.

The stone

The centre is a pear cut moissanite, sometimes called a teardrop. It is a brilliant cut, so it returns light as sharp flashes of white and coloured fire, and its elongated outline flatters the finger.

Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity. The accents in the channel are Colorless and VVS too.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which is why it fires so hard, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. Because the band is broad, a larger centre keeps the proportions right. At 2 carat the ring reads as band led, which some people want.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in white gold, where the rails and the pave read as one continuous bright line. Yellow gold separates them, the warm rails framing the white stones, which is the strongest version of the design. Rose gold is softer again. Silver is the most affordable route. 10K is the hardest, which suits a rail band because the rails stay crisp longest. 14K is the everyday balance, 18K is the richest but the softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast the band, mill the channel, set each accent by hand, close the bezel round your chosen stone, then file and polish for your metal, centre size and finger size after the order arrives. That is how we offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush along the channel rather than across it, since dirt collects at the base of the rails. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, well, because the band has straight parallel edges and the bezel does not spread sideways. This is one of the easier of our rings to stack.

Can it be resized? Only within a small range. The channel and its rails run all the way round, and cutting the shank interrupts both. Please take the sizing seriously with this design. We will help.

Do the rails make the ring feel bulky? It is a substantial ring, yes. The rails are low and rounded rather than sharp, so it does not feel harsh against the neighbouring fingers, but it is not a delicate ring and is not meant to be.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes, the bezel wraps it completely. This is the safest setting we make for a pear point.
