Spaced, not paved

A pave shoulder is a solid line of stones with no metal showing. This is the opposite approach. Each marquise sits on its own, tilted outward like a petal, with one or two round diamonds punctuating the gap before the band narrows to plain gold. You see the metal, the stones and the spaces, and the ring reads as drawn rather than encrusted.

Why marquise accents beside a pear

A pear and a marquise share the same language: both are rounded at one end, pointed at the other, both taper. Setting small marquises beside a pear repeats the centre stone's shape at a smaller scale, which is why the ring looks coherent from a distance even though there are three different cuts on it.

The dainty band

The shank is deliberately fine. It makes the centre stone read considerably larger than the same stone on a wide band, and it sits comfortably against other rings. If you plan to wear this every day and you are choosing at 4 or 5 carat, we would suggest 10K or 14K rather than 18K, since the harder alloys hold a narrow shank better.

The point is protected

The tip of a pear is the most vulnerable part of the stone. Here it sits inside a v claw that wraps around both edges of the point rather than pressing down on it, and the rounded end is held by two further claws.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here, and warm metal showing between the spaced accents is a large part of why this design works. In white gold the stones merge into a continuous line and the effect is quite different. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The marquise and round accents are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

About the bow tie

Every pear has the potential for a bow tie, a dark band across the centre caused by the proportions of the cut rather than by colour or clarity. No certificate grades it. We select our pears by eye on this point and reject those that show it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The spacing of the accents is set from the length of your centre stone, so a 5 carat pear gets larger, further spaced marquises than a 2 carat. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. The gaps between the accents make this an easy ring to keep clean, but do brush underneath the centre stone. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The accents are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre pear. The marquise and round accents are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Not perfectly flat, since the accents run down the shoulders and the point of the pear crosses the shank. A contoured or V shaped band nests properly, and this ring is often worn alone.

Can it be resized? Within about one size. The accents stop at the shoulders, leaving plain metal at the back.
