A heavier bezel on purpose

A fine bezel is almost invisible and lets the stone float. A thick one does the opposite: it frames the diamond in a band of solid colour, which suits large stones and warm metals particularly well. At 4 and 5 carat the effect is closer to a piece of sculpture than to a conventional engagement ring.

The rounded band

The shank is domed on the outside and rounded on the inside, which is what jewellers call a comfort fit. It has more metal in it than a flat or knife edge band, so it balances the weight of a heavy bezel and does not spin on the finger.

Nothing to catch

There are no claws at all. The rim encloses the girdle completely, including the point of the pear, which is the part of the stone most likely to be chipped. Nothing stands proud of the diamond. If you work with your hands, wear gloves, handle children or simply do not want to think about your ring, this is the most practical setting we make.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here, and a heavy warm rim around a colourless pear is exactly what this design is built for. In white gold the bezel recedes and the ring reads more minimal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

About the bow tie

Every pear has the potential for a bow tie, a dark band across the middle caused by the proportions of the cut rather than by colour or clarity. No certificate grades it. We check each pear by eye and reject the ones that show it, which matters more here than usual: a heavy bezel gives a stone nowhere to hide.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The rim is formed around your individual stone and has to stay an even thickness as it travels from the wide curve down to the point, which on a pear is the hardest bezel to cut well. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. A full bezel keeps dirt out better than any claw setting, so this is the easiest ring in the catalogue to maintain. Wipe the outside of the rim to keep the polish bright.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Does a thick bezel make the stone look smaller? It covers slightly more of the girdle than a fine bezel would, but it also adds a bold outline of its own. Most people find the ring reads larger overall, not smaller.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes. The bezel sits low and the shank is a simple round section, so a plain band meets it cleanly on both sides.

Can it be resized? Yes. The band carries no stones, though a heavier shank takes a little more work than a fine one.
