Most solitaires put a slim band under a raised stone. This one does the opposite. The shank is a flat 4 mm wide, squared at the edges and polished to a mirror, and the oval sits low against it in four slim claws so the stone appears to rest on the metal rather than float above it. The result reads as modern and architectural rather than delicate, and it wears like a signet: substantial on the finger, with a broad surface that catches light along its whole length. Design and craftsmanship

A wide flat band is one of the least forgiving things to make. There is nowhere to hide a wave in the surface or a soft edge, and the polish has to be perfectly even across the full width or the reflection breaks up. Our bench forges the shank rather than casting it thin and building it up, which keeps the metal dense and the edges crisp. The head is cut down so the basket sits almost flush with the top of the band, which lowers the whole profile and stops the stone catching on clothing. Because the shank carries so much metal, this ring feels noticeably heavier than a standard 2 mm solitaire, and that weight is part of the design. Every ring is hand finished in our Surat workshop.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond rather than a lower grade of one. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10 it is hard enough for daily wear. Its refractive index is higher, so it returns more coloured fire. Against a broad plain band with no competing accents, a single moissanite has nothing to distract from it and the fire is very easy to see. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, gives the design its full weight and warmth, which suits the wide flat shape. White gold reads cooler and more architectural. Rose gold softens the whole thing. For a wide band worn every day 14K resists dents and scratches better than 18K, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design, though a soft metal in this width will show marks sooner.

Ring size

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. Wide bands fit more snugly than narrow ones at the same nominal size, so if you are between sizes or already wear wide rings, go up a half size. Ask us for a free size guide if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

How wide is the band?
4 mm as standard, which is roughly double a typical solitaire shank. That extra metal is why this design costs more than our slim band solitaires.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes, the shank is straight and the head sits low, so a flat band lies against it cleanly. Many people wear this ring on its own, since 4 mm already fills the finger.

Should I size up?
Usually yes by a half size. A 4 mm band covers more of the finger and feels tighter than a 2 mm band cut to the same measurement.

Does a wide band scratch more?
It shows scratches more, because the flat polished face is a large uninterrupted surface. This is normal and a polish restores it. 14K and 18K gold hold up better than sterling silver here.

Why is the stone set so low?
Lowering the head suits the proportions of a wide band and reduces snagging. It also means the ring sits flat under gloves and against another ring.

Which centre size suits this setting?
3 carat and above balance the width of the band best. A 2 carat oval works but looks more understated against 4 mm of metal.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. With no pave to work around this is one of the easiest rings to keep clean. Dry with a lint free cloth to keep the polish bright.
