Every visible surface of this band is engraved. Scrolling filigree runs along both flanks and across the top, framed top and bottom by fine milgrain beading, and the pattern continues around the sides of the head as well. Above it sits an oval moissanite in a six prong crown. This is an Edwardian style of decoration, done the way it was done then, which means the pattern is cut into the metal rather than cast in relief. It is a ring for someone who wants the detail in the metal rather than in extra stones. Made to order in Surat, India, in ten metals and four centre stone sizes.

Design and craftsmanship

Hand engraving is cut with a graver, a small chisel pushed through the metal by hand, and every curl of the scroll is a separate cut. It cannot be rushed and it cannot be corrected once the metal is removed. The milgrain is raised afterwards with a knurling wheel run along the edge, which produces the row of tiny beads that frames the pattern. Because the engraving is cut into a flat sided band rather than a round one, the pattern stays legible from directly above as well as from the side. The band is about 2.2 mm wide with squared edges, which gives the graver a proper surface to work on. Every piece is engraved and finished by hand by our bench in Surat.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, not carbon, so it is a different material from a diamond rather than a lower grade of one. It measures 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, which makes it hard wearing and well suited to daily use. Its refractive index is higher than a diamond, so it returns more colored fire. Against a heavily worked metal band that extra brightness helps, because the stone has to hold its own against a lot of visual texture. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, is the traditional choice for engraved work because the warm colour throws the shadows in the cuts into relief and makes the pattern readable. Rose gold does the same with a softer tone. White gold gives a cooler, more graphic version of the same design. For engraved work 14K holds a crisp cut better than the softer 18K, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. Because the engraving runs the full circumference, we make this style to size rather than resizing it afterwards, since cutting the band would break the pattern. Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

Is the engraving really cut by hand?
Yes. The scroll is cut with a graver by our engraver, which is why the lines have varying depth and catch light unevenly. Cast imitation engraving looks flat and uniform by comparison.

Will the engraving wear away?
Not quickly. The cuts are deep, not surface scratches. Over decades of daily wear the high points soften, which most people consider part of the appeal. We can recut the pattern for you at any point.

What is milgrain?
The row of tiny raised beads running along the edges of the band. It is a traditional finishing technique that softens the edge of a design and frames engraving.

Can this ring be resized?
We strongly prefer to make it in your size. Resizing means cutting through the engraved band and rejoining it, which interrupts the pattern and requires recutting.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The shank is straight with squared edges, so a straight band sits flat against it. A matching engraved band pairs best.

Does moissanite scratch or cloud over time?
No. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it resists scratching from ordinary contact, and its brilliance comes from the material itself rather than a coating.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Work the brush along the engraved channels where residue settles, since dirt in the cuts is what dulls the pattern. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth.

How long does it take to make?
Production usually takes twelve to sixteen working days for engraved styles, plus shipping time. The engraving is done by hand after casting.
