Save 20%Seen from above this is a plain solitaire: an oval moissanite in four prongs on a slim polished band. Look at it from the side and the basket beneath the stone opens out like a tulip, each prong rising from a curved petal that flares away from the shank before folding back in to hold the stone. It is the kind of detail that jewellers used to put into settings as a matter of course and that most modern rings have dropped. Nothing about it shows on the hand from the top, which is exactly why it is worth including. Made to order in Surat, India, in ten metals and four centre stone sizes.
A tulip basket is more work than a plain one for the same job. The petals are carved and filed by hand after casting so each curve matches the other three, and the openings between them have to be even or the head looks lopsided from below. What you gain is strength and light. The petals brace the prongs from behind, so they resist being knocked open, and the large gaps between them let light into the pavilion from every direction. The shank stays deliberately simple at about 1.8 mm, rounded and polished, so all the character sits in the head. Every piece is finished by hand by our bench in Surat.
Moissanite is silicon carbide, not carbon, so it is a different material from a diamond rather than a lower grade of one. It measures 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, which makes it hard wearing and well suited to daily use. Its refractive index is higher than a diamond, so it returns more colored fire, and an open basket like this one gives it every opportunity to do so because so little metal sits under the stone. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.
Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, shows the shape of the petals most clearly because the curves catch and hold the light. White gold makes the whole head recede so only the stone registers. Rose gold sits between the two. For everyday wear 14K is harder than 18K and keeps a carved basket crisp for longer, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.
Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. The plain shank resizes easily later, though ordering the correct size at the outset is always better. If you are unsure, measure the inside diameter of a ring you already wear or ask us for a free size guide.
We can add pave to the shoulders, set a hidden halo inside the basket, widen the band, use a lab grown diamond or a colored moissanite in the centre, or make a matching plain wedding band. For any other request please contact us at https://mapplegems.com/pages/contact and we will quote it before you order.
Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.
What is a tulip basket?
It is the part of the setting under the stone. Instead of a plain wire cage, the metal is shaped into four curved petals that flare outward like a tulip before rising into the prongs. It is purely a side profile detail and adds structural support.
Why choose a tulip basket over a plain one?
Two reasons. It braces the prongs so they hold their position better over years of wear, and it gives the ring something to look at from the side, which is the angle the wearer sees most often.
Does it sit high on the finger?
It is a moderate profile, higher than a flush low setting but lower than a cathedral. The petals sit below the girdle of the stone, so nothing protrudes to catch.
Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The band is straight and plain and the basket sits above it, so a straight wedding band lies flat with no gap.
Does the open basket make cleaning easier?
Much easier. You can reach the entire underside of the stone with a brush, which is where residue collects on any ring.
Does moissanite scratch or cloud over time?
No. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it resists scratching from ordinary contact, and its brilliance comes from the material itself rather than a coating.
How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, working the brush up through the openings in the basket. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth.
How long does it take to make?
Production usually takes ten to fourteen working days, plus shipping time. Every ring is cut and set only after it is ordered.
