Oval Moissanite Six Petal Prong Solitaire Engagement Ring

Six prongs hold the oval, and each one is finished as a small pointed petal rather than a rounded bead. Two sit at the top and bottom of the stone and two on each side, so the outline of the oval is broken by six fine points spaced evenly around it. It is a detail you only really see close up, and it is what makes this setting different from a plain six prong head.

Underneath, the band does not simply meet the setting. It divides into two fine strands that cross over one another just below the stone and rise into the basket, so the shank looks as if it has been drawn up around the oval rather than soldered to it.

How it compares

A four prong setting leaves the narrow ends of the oval exposed, which is where the stone is most vulnerable. Six prongs protect those ends and hold a large stone more evenly. Against our other six prong design, which sits between pear side stones, this one is a pure solitaire with nothing else on the ring.

Wearing and stacking

The crossover base sits close to the finger and the shank is plain, so a straight wedding band meets it cleanly at the sides and there is plenty of plain metal for resizing.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush around the six prongs and through the open gallery. Rinse and dry with a lint free cloth. Have the prongs checked once a year, as with any solitaire.

Questions buyers ask

Why six prongs instead of four
Ovals chip most easily at their narrow ends. A prong at each end protects them, and six points spread the pressure more evenly across a large stone.

Do six prongs cover more of the stone
Only slightly. Each prong here is tapered to a fine petal point, so they take up less surface than four heavy claws would.

Is a 1.6 mm band strong enough
Yes for everyday wear. The band thickens where it splits and rises into the setting, which is where the load is.

Is moissanite hard enough for daily wear
Yes. Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond among stones used in jewellery.
