There is no basket under this stone. The oval sits almost directly on the band, held by four flat claw prongs that fold over the girdle, so the whole ring is barely thicker than the shank itself. That makes it one of the lowest sitting settings we make: it slides under a glove, does not rock when you close your hand and never catches on a sleeve. Design and craftsmanship

Setting a stone this low is harder than setting it high. Without a gallery there is no ready made seat, so the prongs themselves have to be notched to the exact depth of the pavilion and the shank has to be relieved underneath so the point of the stone clears the finger. Our goldsmiths cut the four claws from solid metal, file them flat and wide so they hold a broad area of the girdle rather than a single point, then set the oval by pushing each claw over in stages, working opposite corners so the stone stays level. The result sits low enough that a wedding band lies right against it. Every ring is finished by hand in our Surat workshop.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond rather than a lower grade of one. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, it is hard enough for daily wear. A low setting sacrifices a little of the light that would enter a raised stone from below, but with nothing else on the ring the oval is completely unobstructed from above, and moissanite returns more coloured fire than diamond. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Metal options

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, gives the strongest contrast between the warm claws and the colourless stone. White gold makes the claws almost disappear. Rose gold is the softest option. Because the claws carry the stone without a basket, 14K is the most sensible choice for daily wear, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable.

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. The band is plain, so it can be resized easily later without touching the setting.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and there are no other stones. We never describe it as a diamond.

How low does it actually sit?
The stone rests almost on the band. There is only enough clearance underneath for the pavilion, which is the minimum a prong setting allows.

How is this different from your cathedral solitaire?
The cathedral version lifts the stone on arched shoulders and has real height in profile. This one does the opposite and removes as much height as possible.

Is a low setting more practical?
Generally yes. It catches less, sits stable on the finger and wears comfortably under gloves. The trade off is that it is harder to clean underneath and slightly less light enters from below.

Will a wedding band sit flush?
Yes, better than on almost any other setting. The stone sits low and the shank is straight, so a flat band lies right against it with no gap.

Are flat claw prongs secure?
Yes. A wide flat claw grips a broader area of the girdle than a thin round prong, which is why this style is often chosen for active wear. We include a lifetime setting check.

Which centre size suits it?
All four. A 5 carat oval set this low looks particularly striking because the stone appears to float on the finger with almost no metal beneath it.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, working from underneath as well as on top since the space beneath the stone is tight. Rinse and pat dry.

How long does it take to make?
