The band on this ring is squared rather than round, and every visible face of it carries engraving. Scrollwork runs along the top of each shoulder and continues down the outer sides, so the pattern is there whichever way you turn your hand. Milgrain beading edges each engraved panel and runs round the collar beneath the oval as well. This is an Edwardian approach to decoration: no accent stones at all, every effect achieved by cutting into and raising the metal itself. Four slim claws hold the centre. Design and craftsmanship

Hand engraving is cut, not stamped. The engraver holds a graver against the metal and pushes it, lifting a curl of gold away with each stroke, and the depth and direction of every line is decided in the moment. That is why the scrolls on a hand engraved ring never repeat exactly and why the pattern reads as alive rather than printed. Engraving the sides as well as the top doubles the work and requires the ring to be reset in the holder several times. The milgrain borders go on last, and they have to be started and finished at exactly the point where the engraved panel ends. Every ring is cut and finished by hand in our Surat workshop.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond rather than a lower grade of one. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, it is hard enough for daily wear. Its refractive index is higher, so it returns more coloured fire. On a ring with no accent stones, that single centre stone is the only bright thing against the worked metal, which is exactly the contrast Edwardian jewellers were after. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Metal options

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, is the traditional metal for hand engraving and gives the deepest shadows in the cut lines. Rose gold is close behind and reads warmer. White gold shows engraving less strongly because there is less contrast between the cut and the surface. For daily wear 14K holds engraved detail and milgrain beads longer than softer 18K, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.

Ring size

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. Because the engraving is laid out to fit your size, tell us at the time of ordering rather than resizing later, which would interrupt the pattern at the base.

Custom orders

We can change the scroll pattern to a wheat, floral or geometric design, engrave a date or initials inside the band, leave the sides plain and engrave only the top, use a lab grown diamond or a coloured moissanite in the centre, or make a matching engraved wedding band. Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

Is the engraving really done by hand?
Yes. Our engraver cuts the scrolls with a graver, one line at a time. That is why no two rings are identical and why the pattern has depth rather than the flat look of a cast or machined finish.

How is this different from your vintage scroll engraved ring?
That design engraves the shoulders only. This one uses a squared shank and carries the scrollwork over the top face and down both sides, with milgrain framing every panel, so there is far more worked surface.

Will the engraving wear away?
Very slowly. Deep hand cut lines last decades. If they soften after many years an engraver can re cut them, and choosing 14K rather than 18K slows the process because the metal is harder.

Can I have it resized later?
Resizing cuts through the band at the base, which interrupts an engraved pattern. We can do it and re engrave the join, but it is far better to order the correct size. Ask us for a free size guide.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The shank is straight and the collar sits low, so a flat band lies against it cleanly. An engraved band in the same pattern matches exactly.

Which centre size suits this setting?
All four. A 2 or 3 carat oval leaves the engraving as an equal part of the design; 4 and 5 carat make the stone the clear focus with the metalwork as texture.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush worked along the engraved lines, where polish and lotion collect and dull the pattern. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth.

How long does it take to make?
Production usually takes fourteen to eighteen working days for this design, since the engraving is done by hand, plus shipping time.
