Step 1
Design & Selection
We finalise your design and hand-pick the certified center stone.
Save 20%The side stones on this ring are half moon cuts, each one flat along the edge that meets the centre stone and curved on the outside. Because that flat edge follows the girdle of the oval exactly, the three stones sit against one another with no visible gap and read as a single continuous shape rather than three separate pieces. Behind them the band splits into two strands that twist around each other, one plain and one set with pave, and the twist carries the pave about a third of the way round the finger before the strands merge again. Made to order in Surat, India, in ten metals and four centre stone sizes.
Half moons are cut to order for the ring they go into. The straight edge has to match the exact curve of the centre stone at the point where they meet, which means the two side stones for a 2 carat oval will not fit a 3 carat oval. Our cutters shape them against the actual centre stone, and the setters then place the half moons first and bring the oval down between them so the three stones close up tight. Getting both sides identical is the hardest part, because any difference in the flat edge shows as a gap on one side only. The twisted shank is formed from two separate strands soldered at the crossings and filed flush before the pave is cut into the upper one. Every ring is hand finished in our Surat workshop.
Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond rather than a lower grade of one. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, it is hard enough for daily wear. Its refractive index is higher, so it returns more coloured fire. Half moon cuts have a broad flat face and fewer facets than a brilliant, so they flash rather than sparkle, and that contrast against the busy oval in the middle is the reason this combination works. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.
Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. White gold, as photographed, lets the three stones read as one unbroken shape because no metal colour interrupts the joins. Yellow and rose gold outline each stone separately and make the twist in the shank more obvious. For daily wear 14K is harder than 18K and holds fine pave beads better, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.
Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. The pave stops well before the base, leaving a plain section that can be resized without disturbing any stone.
We can use trapezoid or tapered baguette side stones instead of half moons, leave both strands plain, extend the pave further, set a lab grown diamond or a coloured moissanite as the centre, or make a matching twisted wedding band. For any other request please contact us at https://mapplegems.com/pages/contact and we will quote it before you order.
Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone, both half moons and all the pave are lab created moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.
What is a half moon cut?
A stone cut with one straight edge and one curved edge, like a semicircle. It is used specifically as a side stone because the straight edge can sit flush against the centre stone with no gap.
Why choose half moons over rounds?
They fill the space beside the centre stone completely. Round side stones always leave small triangles of metal visible between the stones; half moons do not, so the head reads as one solid form.
How is this different from your other twisted pave rings?
Those are solitaires with a twisted band. This one adds half moon side stones, which changes it from a solitaire into a three stone ring and makes the head considerably wider.
Are half moon stones fragile?
The straight edge is the vulnerable part and it is protected here by sitting against the centre stone with a prong at each end. Moissanite at 9.25 on the Mohs scale also resists chipping better than most gemstones.
Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Not entirely, because the twisted strands are uneven where a band would meet them. A contoured band follows the twist properly and we can make one to match.
Which centre size suits this setting?
All four. The half moons are cut to fit whichever centre stone you choose, so the proportions hold at every size.
How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, working into the gap between the two twisted strands where soap collects. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth.
How long does it take to make?
Production usually takes fourteen to eighteen working days for this design, since the half moons are cut to match your centre stone, plus shipping time.
