Step 1
Design & Selection
We finalise your design and hand-pick the certified center stone.
Save 20%Look closely at the shoulders of this ring and you will find small round moissanites sunk level with the surface, sitting inside the engraved vine pattern rather than on top of it. Flush setting like this was how Victorian and Edwardian jewellers put stones into a working band without anything standing proud to catch. The engraving runs the length of both shoulders and continues onto the outer faces, and the accents are placed where the scrolls naturally open out, so they read as part of the pattern instead of an addition to it. The oval sits above it all in four plain claws. Made to order in Surat, India, in ten metals and four centre stone sizes.
Flush setting means drilling a seat into solid metal, dropping the stone in until its table is level with the surface, then tapping the surrounding metal down over the girdle with a punch. There are no prongs and no beads, only a thin bright line of metal round each stone. Doing it inside an engraved panel is harder again, because the hammering can distort nearby cut lines, so our bench sets the stones first and cuts the surrounding scrollwork afterwards, working the pattern around each accent. That order of operations is what lets the vine and the stones look like one design rather than two. Every ring is cut, set and finished by hand in our Surat workshop.
Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond rather than a lower grade of one. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, it is hard enough for daily wear. Its refractive index is higher, so it returns more coloured fire. Flush set stones catch light only from directly above, which is exactly the effect wanted here: small points of brightness appearing and disappearing inside the engraving as your hand moves. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.
Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, gives the deepest shadows in the engraved lines and the strongest contrast against the flush set stones. Rose gold is warmer and softer. White gold shows the engraving least. For daily wear 14K holds both engraving and flush settings better than softer 18K, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.
Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. The engraving and the accent placement are laid out for your size, so please order the correct size rather than resizing later.
We can leave the accents out for a plain engraved band, add more of them, change the vine to a wheat or geometric pattern, engrave a date inside, set a lab grown diamond or a coloured moissanite in the centre, or make a matching engraved wedding band. For any other request please contact us at https://mapplegems.com/pages/contact and we will quote it before you order.
Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone and every flush set accent are lab created moissanite, and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.
What is flush setting?
The stone is sunk into the metal so its table sits level with the surface, held by metal pushed down over its girdle. Nothing protrudes, so nothing can snag. It is sometimes called gypsy setting.
Is flush setting secure?
Very. There are no prongs to bend or wear thin, and the stone is surrounded by solid metal on every side. It is the most durable way to set a small stone into a band.
How is this different from your other engraved rings?
Our plain engraved solitaire has no stones in the band at all, and our engraved three stone puts full sized accents beside the centre. This one hides small stones inside the engraving itself, which is a quieter effect you notice only up close.
Will the engraving wear away?
Slowly, over many years. Any engraver can re cut it, and the flush set stones are unaffected by that work. 14K holds detail longer than 18K.
Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The shoulders sit level with the finger and the head is compact, so a straight band lies cleanly against it.
Which centre size suits this setting?
All four. The band detail stays the same width whichever centre you choose, so a larger oval simply makes the ring bolder without unbalancing it.
How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush worked along the engraved lines. Flush set stones collect very little dirt because there are no prongs, so this ring stays clean more easily than a pave one.
How long does it take to make?
Production usually takes fourteen to eighteen working days for this design, since the engraving and flush setting are done by hand, plus shipping time.
