Oval Moissanite Flat Edge Band Solitaire Engagement Ring

A 3 mm band with a flat outer face and sharply squared edges, and above it an oval lifted clear of the finger in an open four claw basket. The two halves of the design pull in opposite directions on purpose: the shank is deliberately architectural and modern, while the raised head is a traditional solitaire setting that lets light through from every side. What you get is a ring with real presence on the hand and a stone that still reads as floating rather than sitting on a slab. Design and craftsmanship

Squared edges are the hardest thing to keep clean on a polished band. Every pass of the polishing wheel wants to round them off, so the finishing has to be done with the ring held against a flat lap rather than a mop, working the face and the two edges as three separate surfaces. Our bench forges the shank rather than casting it, which keeps the metal dense and the corners crisp. The basket is built as a separate component with an open gallery beneath the stone, then soldered to the top of the flat band, and the join is filed until the transition from flat shank to round basket disappears. Every ring is finished by hand in our Surat workshop.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond rather than a lower grade of one. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10 it is hard enough for daily wear. Its refractive index is higher, so it returns more coloured fire, and a raised open basket lets light enter from below as well as above, which makes a real difference on a ring with no accent stones to distract from the centre. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Metal options

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, gives the flat band real weight and warmth. White gold reads cooler and more architectural, which suits the squared profile. Rose gold softens it. For a flat polished band worn daily, 14K resists scratches and edge wear better than 18K, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design though it will mark sooner.

Ring size

Every ring is made to your finger size, so choose your size at checkout. We make US sizes 3 through 13, including half sizes. A 3 mm flat band fits slightly more snugly than a rounded band of the same measurement, so consider a half size up if you are between sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone is lab created moissanite and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

How wide is the band?
3 mm as standard, which is wider than a typical solitaire shank at around 2 mm. The extra metal is why this ring costs more than our slim band designs.

How is this different from your wide flat band solitaire?
That one is 4 mm with the stone set low against the band. This is 3 mm with the stone raised in an open basket, so it reads lighter and lets more light through the centre stone.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The shank is straight and the basket sits above the band line, so a flat band lies against it cleanly. A flat edged band matches the profile exactly.

Do squared edges feel sharp?
No. The edges are crisp on the outside but the inside of the band is comfort rounded, so what touches your finger is smooth.

Should I size up?
Possibly by a half size. A 3 mm flat band covers more of the finger than a narrow rounded one and can feel tighter at the same nominal measurement.

Which centre size suits this setting?
All four. The raised basket keeps the proportions working even at 2 carat, and at 4 or 5 carat the flat band gives the large stone a solid base to sit on.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush underneath the basket, where dust collects on any raised setting. Dry with a lint free cloth to keep the flat face bright.
