Design and craftsmanship

Engraving around a three stone head is harder than engraving a plain band because the pattern has to run up to the side stones and stop cleanly without crowding them. Our engraver works out where the scrolls will terminate before cutting anything, then cuts from the middle of the shoulder outward so the pattern stays centred. The side stones are set after the engraving is finished, which protects the cut lines from the pressure of setting. Milgrain goes on last, framing the engraved panel so the eye reads it as a distinct band of ornament rather than decoration bleeding into plain metal. Every ring is cut and finished by hand in our Surat workshop.

How moissanite compares to a diamond

Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different material from diamond rather than a lower grade of one. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, it is hard enough for everyday wear. Its refractive index is higher, so it returns more coloured fire. Three brilliant cut stones in a row give a wide continuous line of light across the finger, which sits well against the matte texture of hand engraved metal. This ring is sold as moissanite and is never described as a diamond.

Metal options

Available in 925 sterling silver, 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold, 14K rose gold, 14K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Yellow gold, as photographed, gives the deepest shadow in the engraved lines and is the traditional choice for this style. Rose gold reads warmer and slightly softer. White gold shows the engraving least because there is less tonal contrast between cut and surface. For daily wear 14K holds engraved detail and milgrain longer than softer 18K, and 925 sterling silver is the most affordable way to try the design.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a moissanite ring or a diamond ring?
It is a moissanite engagement ring. The centre stone and both side stones are lab created moissanite, and the ring is sold as moissanite. We never describe it as a diamond.

Is the engraving really cut by hand?
Yes. Our engraver cuts each scroll with a graver rather than stamping or machining it, which is why the lines have real depth and why no two rings match exactly.

How is this different from your plain three stone round side ring?
Same head, entirely different band. That version is a smooth polished shank; this one has flat engraved shoulders framed in milgrain, which makes the ring look considerably more antique.

Will the engraving wear away?
Very slowly. Deep hand cut lines last decades, and any engraver can re cut them if they soften. 14K holds the detail better than 18K because the metal is harder.

Can it be resized later?
It can, but resizing cuts the band at the base and interrupts the pattern. We can re engrave the join, though ordering the right size from the start is far better. Ask us for a free size guide.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The shoulders sit level with the finger and the head is compact, so a straight band lies against it cleanly. An engraved band in the same pattern matches perfectly.

Which centre size suits this setting?
All four. We scale the side stones to the centre so the three stone proportion holds, and the engraved shoulders stay the same width whichever size you pick.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush worked along the engraved lines and around the claws, where dirt collects and dulls the pattern. Rinse well and dry with a lint free cloth.

How long does it take to make?
Production usually takes fourteen to eighteen working days for this design, since the engraving is done by hand, plus shipping time.
